Welcome to London!
Whether you just landed, been on the road with Wolfgang, Brian and Christine, or came early to do some acclimatizing on your own, we are delighted to meet you at last.
Don’t worry if you find London a bit intimidating at first – it is a huge, sprawly, higgledy-piggledy metropolis and it can be confusing. There’s no street grid, the traffic is on the “wrong” side anyway, the blocks aren’t often rectangular and the streets have names that duplicate – there are twenty different Gloucester Roads. And what it is probably hardest to comprehend, at this point, is how totally normal this will all seem to you soon, we promise!
Be sensitive to the fact that – especially in these first few jetlagged and exhausting days – the tone of your phone and email conversations with your parents can easily be misinterpreted and cause needless anxiety on their parts – they might still be agonizing over a small adjustment issue you mentioned when you first got here while you can barely remember what it was that was bothering you at the time. Cultural adjustment is an ongoing process, and it can – and should be! – challenging, but you are the one who is here and who has to deal with it personally to move forward.
Concentrate on settling in and setting up your flat, and bring any questions and concerns to SU London staff and student guides (they wear orange t-shirts so they are easy to find). We are all here to give you as much information as we can to help you to make this semester everything you want it to be, and the more we know about you – what you’d like to do here, see here, be a part of here – the more we can help you hit the ground running…
Good luck!
